August, Augusto, Gusto, Mucho Gusto......... Six degrees of separation or in this case 10 degrees between staying in the air conditioning or exploring outside in the 90 degree heat. Sunset cruises take care of that. Cool breezes and gentle waters make for a good time on the Wicomico. Check out the activities for August....a Crab Feast in Crisfield, a raft off at Marshy Hope, and a cruise to Onancock. I hope you all are enjoying our New Executive Chef and Restaurant Manager David Easton. Quite frankly, the food is superb. I have recently been informed that the Yacht Club no longer enjoys a reciprocal agreement with Green Hill Y&CC. We are sorry to tell you this but we want all our Green Hill friends to know that they are heartily welcome at our Club. We voted in 10 new members this past month. I invite all new Members to come often and enjoy the many benefits of belonging to the Wicomico Yacht Club. You may send any comments you may have to my email at Tom@ThomasPMonahanLLC.com. Just for grins....A few nautical terms you might find useful. Keel - A stopping device for your boat. It works by contacting the bottom of the water body you are in, thus inhibiting forward motion. GPS - An electronic device that allows you to navigate out of sight of landmarks before the batteries expire. Bow - This is what you do in front of your banker when you are asking for more money to spend on your boat. As your boat will surely cost much more than what you initially asked for, it is imperative that you learn how to do this quickly. Bridge - Something you cross to get to the other side of a body of water when you do not have a boat available. Can also be used for removing masts of sailing vessels if the bridge is low enough. Yacht - When discussing boats, if the other is determined to be smaller than yours, it is then customary to refer to yours as a yacht. See you all down to the Club real soon, Tom
FIRST MATES CORNER Summer is flying by but First Mates still have a couple of events in July that we hope you will come out and enjoy. The first is on July 24th, where we are sponsoring Poker Run and music on the lawn. The always popular Poker Run will begin at 1 to 4. Music by Tom and Bunnie will begin at 4 and may or may not be on the lawn. Weather, heat and humidity will probably help us choose the best place to enjoy the music. The music by Crossroads got rained out on July 10th and has been rescheduled for July 31st. Bring your chairs and come enjoy a late afternoon-early evening concert of good classic rock and blues beginning at 6 til 10. As always, the First Mates have a good selection of wearables. Check out the display cabinet under the bulletin board. If we don’t have your size and style, Jan Mitchell can usually get what you want. Once again, the First Mates would like to thank everyone for their support in our fundraising efforts. We have been able to provide new seating around the pool, a gazebo on the deck by the pool, improvements to the bar area and new lights. By the way, check out the new globe lights that have been installed over the bar. Respectfully submitted, Benita Abbott President - First Mates
FLEET CAPTAIN'S REPORT August 2010 Newsletter What a fantastic weekend everyone had on our cruise to National Harbor. Typically on such a long trip we may end up with 3-4 boats at the most, yet we had Nine for this trip. The last stop of this cruise was at Kinsale Harbor Marina. We got there a day early with "Cynful" and waited on the rest to return from Colonial Beach. The couple managing the kinsale Harbor Marina were most accommodating and the docking logistics was challenging to say the least. We would like to thank the crews of Another Day in Paradise, Perfect Perc, Comfort Zone, Miss Bonnie, TomTom, Lite Bite, Double D, Heather Nicole and Current Affair for participating in this cruise. And also to Cynful and Miani for making the last leg. Our next cruise was to Crisfield for the 4th of July celebration. Seeing as this is only the second year that we've done this cruise we had a great turnout by land and sea. The crab feast on the 4th was a great success, thanks to all the help from the various members supplying crabs, chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs and lots of covered dishes. The only mishap on the entire cruise was another bicycle adventure where a certain boater got too close to the pavement. Thanks go to Fred Lankford for being there to help her. Coming up is Chesapeake Beach and then the Rumbley Day trip. For any that have not been to the Goose Creek Marina in Rumbley this is always a great time. The owner Adam is always glad to see us and always serves up excellent food. This is generally a small boat cruise by several larger boats have also made his trip. Call Adam at (410) 651-1193 if you need any more information about this trip. Please check the cruise listings below and sign up at the club. Remember you are responsible for making your own reservations. There are spreadsheets on the board as well with marina contact information. POOL NEWS The water is wet and clear, com on down for a dit. A great big thank you to the First Mates for the generous donation of chairs and chaise lounges around the pool and Cabana on the deck. They add a lot of color and ocmfort to our pool experience. Thanks also to all the volunteers who keep thing functioning and healthy. Thanks to Scott McCurdy and Brent Malone (How Sweet It Is) for the Palms and planters. Just a reminder, if you have a little one in diapers at the pool, please make sure they have a Swimmi Diaper on. Also NO GLASS or SMOKING within the pool area. Please police your space when leaving and use the trash cans. Please collapse the umbrellas and place on the ground under the tables when you leave. If you put it up, take it down! They tend to fly in the wind. Thanks, the Pool Committee
